Bear spray can’t travel in a passenger’s checked or carry-on luggage, so renting or buying locally is the only option for visitors. For anyone staying long enough that a rental period won’t cover the whole trip, buying is worth considering — but shipping and store availability come with a few Hokkaido-specific quirks.
Where it’s sold
montbell began renting bear spray at Hokkaido stores (including its Higashikawa location) from September 2024, and select stores also sell cans outright — stock varies by store, so confirm availability before visiting. Shugakuso, a Hokkaido-based outdoor retailer, also carries bear spray. Kojitsu Sanso, a national outdoor retailer with Hokkaido locations, is another common source. Stock varies by store and season, so call ahead to confirm.
Shipping within Hokkaido
If ordering online for delivery within Hokkaido, only Sagawa Express currently handles ground shipping of bear spray. Japan Post (ゆうパック) and Yamato (クロネコヤマト) both decline to ship it. If a retailer’s default shipping option is Japan Post or Yamato, check whether they offer a Sagawa alternative before ordering — otherwise the order may be refused at checkout or cancelled after the fact.
What this means for trip planning
- If flying in and buying locally, plan the purchase for day one, ideally near your first trailhead
- If ordering ahead to a hotel or accommodation, confirm the shipping carrier before paying
- Rental remains the simpler option for most visitors — see our regional rental guides for Shiretoko and Daisetsuzan
