Tomuraushi: Bear Spray Rental at the Trailhead (and by Mail)

Rental Locations

Tomuraushi is one of Daisetsuzan’s more remote peaks, usually tackled as a multi-day trek rather than a day hike, and its trailhead lodges now double as bear spray pickup points — through a small rental service called Yamabiyori that also ships anywhere in Hokkaido.

Where to pick it up

Two lodges near the Tomuraushi trailhead now offer pickup:

  • Higashi-Daisetsu-so (Tomuraushi Onsen) — ¥2,200 for the base rental
  • Lake Inn (Kuttari Onsen) — ¥1,650 for the base rental

Both are accommodations first, rental points second — so this works especially well if you’re already staying there the night before you start walking.

If you’re not staying at either lodge

Yamabiyori also ships bear spray to a location of your choice within Hokkaido, with pricing starting around ¥2,750–4,400 for a 1-night, 2-day rental depending on pickup timing and method. Card payment only, booked through their site.

Higashi-Daisetsu-so also began offering Coco Heli rescue beacon rentals from the same announcement — worth considering together if you’re heading deep into Tomuraushi’s more remote sections.

Who runs this

Yamabiyori is a small operation founded in 2024 by a Tokyo-based company employee who visits Daisetsuzan almost every month and got tired of not being able to fly with his own bear spray. He partnered with a vegetable stand in Makubetsu and, later, lodges along the Tomuraushi approach to make pickup and drop-off possible without a fixed shop of his own. It’s since been covered by Kyodo News, NHK Hokkaido, and the Yomiuri Shimbun — a small business, but not an obscure one.
