Asahikawa is the usual gateway city for Asahidake and the wider Daisetsuzan range, and two separate operators there rent bear spray to hikers passing through. They work differently enough that it’s worth knowing both before you pick one.
Asahikawa Ride (private rental shop)
A bike and gear rental shop in central Asahikawa, with a return option near Asahidake itself. The fee runs ¥1,500 for the first day and ¥1,000 for each day after that, and the spray on offer is Counter Assault, kept unsprayed and within its expiration date. Book online at least a day ahead — this shop doesn’t take phone, email, or walk-in reservations — and plan your pickup or drop-off for 10:00 to noon or 4pm to 9pm.
Returning downtown isn’t the only option: you can also hand the can back at Transit Higashikawa, close to Asahidake, for a small collection fee on top. A photo ID is copied at pickup. If the can gets used, you’ll owe the gap between its full retail price and what you already paid in rental fees, which the shop checks by weighing the can when it comes back.

Asahikawa Tourism & Local Products Information Center (ATCA)
Run by the Asahikawa Tourism Convention Association, with a simpler day-tiered pricing structure and a cash deposit instead of a per-incident charge. It costs ¥1,000 per day of rental, scaling straight up to ¥5,000 for five days, and pickup or return runs 9am to 5pm.
Book at least a week ahead of your pickup date, by noon. You’ll need to be 18 or older with valid photo ID, and the centre holds a ¥10,000 cash deposit that comes back in full once the spray is returned unused and undamaged. Online booking is open from late April through the end of October each season. Cancel by noon two days out and it’s free; any later and the full charge applies.

Which one fits your trip
The two operators suit different planning styles. The Asahikawa city shop only needs a day’s notice and doesn’t hold a cash deposit, so it works for plans that come together close to your hike. The tourism association’s counter needs a week’s notice and a ¥10,000 cash hold, which suits a trip you’ve already mapped out well ahead of time but rules it out if you’re deciding late. If you’ll be near Asahidake itself rather than downtown Asahikawa when you’re done hiking, only the city shop’s Higashikawa return point saves you the trip back into town.
Rates, hours, and booking windows are as published on each operator’s site as of Aug 2026 and may change by season. Confirm directly before booking.
