Bear Spray Rental at JR Niseko Station

Rental Locations

Niseko draws more international visitors than almost anywhere else in Hokkaido, and the tourist information centre right at JR Niseko Station rents bear spray every single day of the year.

The basics

The Niseko Resort Tourism Association runs the rental out of the JR Niseko Station Tourist Information Centre, which stays open daily from morning until evening year-round. Renters get their choice of two brands: Frontiersman, with a spray distance of about 10 metres, or Kuma Ichimokusan — notable as the first bear spray made domestically in Japan. A holster comes with every rental, and a carabiner too when supply allows, handy for clipping the can to a pack strap.

Pricing

  • ¥1,000 per 24 hours for visitors (Niseko town residents pay ¥500)
  • A ¥10,000 deposit per can, refunded in full if it comes back unused and undamaged
  • Billed in 24-hour blocks from the time you pick it up

Eligibility

You’ll need to be 18 or older with photo ID — a copy is taken and destroyed after you return the spray. Staff will also walk you through bear encounter basics and the rental terms at pickup, and the same contraindications apply as elsewhere in Hokkaido: avoid using the spray if you have asthma, sensitive skin, wear contact lenses, or have allergies.

Rates and details are as published by the Niseko Resort Tourism Association as of Aug 2026 and may change by season. Confirm directly before your trip: 0136-44-2468.
