Every other rental option in this guide requires a stop at a physical counter. The Doto Trail Club, which manages the Hokkaido East Trail (北海道東トレイル), runs something different: bear spray and bear canisters shipped directly to where you’re staying, with return by mail or drop-off — no counter visit required.
A note from Bear Safety Hokkaido: this service is specifically built for point-to-point thru-hikers on the Hokkaido East Trail, who may never pass a fixed rental counter at all. If your trip is a single day hike near Shiretoko or Daisetsuzan instead, a counter pickup (see our Shiretoko guide) is simpler.
How it works
The Doto Trail Club ships bear spray or a bear canister to your accommodation along the Hokkaido East Trail, timed to arrive before you check in the night before you start walking. After your hike, you return the item either in person at the Kawayu Trail Office or by mail.
- Shipping is limited to locations along the Hokkaido East Trail (eastern Hokkaido only)
- Bookings must be made at least 5 days before your start date — this isn’t a last-minute option
- The site has a full English version, with its own reservation forms for each service

Bear spray pricing
As listed on the official page (checked Aug 2026), round-trip shipping included:
| Duration | Price |
|---|---|
| 3 days | ¥5,500 |
| 7 days | ¥7,700 |
| 14 days | ¥9,900 |
| 21 days | ¥12,100 |
| 30 days | ¥15,400 |
Note: at the time we checked, the reservation form displayed slightly different figures for the 7-day and 21-day tiers than the main page text (¥6,600 and ¥13,200). Confirm the exact price at checkout before booking.
Extending your rental adds ¥1,100 per additional day. If the spray is used, damaged, or lost, the replacement cost is ¥18,700 (minus what you already paid in rental fees); a lost or damaged holster adds ¥3,300.
Bear canister pricing
Two sizes are available — a small (5L, recommended for 1–2 days) and a large (7.2L, recommended for 3–4 days):
| Duration | Small | Large |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days | ¥4,400 | ¥5,500 |
| 7 days | ¥5,500 | ¥6,600 |
| 14 days | ¥7,700 | ¥8,800 |
| 21 days | ¥9,900 | ¥11,000 |
| 30 days | ¥12,100 | ¥13,200 |
Loss or damage is charged at ¥22,000 per canister, minus rental fees already paid.
Who this suits
- Hikers doing a multi-day or point-to-point section of the Hokkaido East Trail
- Anyone flying in without their own spray or canister
- Hikers who want food storage sorted (the canister) alongside bear spray, in one booking
If your trip is centred on a single area with a fixed rental counter — Shiretoko, for instance — a counter pickup is usually simpler and doesn’t require booking 5 days out. This service earns its place specifically because the Hokkaido East Trail doesn’t have that kind of fixed point.
